Siddikur soars at Hero Indian Open

Siddikur tightened his grip at the Hero Indian Open with a second round six-under-par 66 on Friday to put himself in position to end a title jinx at the Delhi Golf Club.

The Bangladeshi opened with an eagle and holed a 20-footer birdie putt on the last for a 12-under-par 132 total, two shots ahead of Chapchai Nirat of Thailand, who posted a 68 at the US$1.25 million Asian Tour event.

Rahil Gangjee led the India charge on 69, three shots back from the leader while Adam Groom of Australia was a further shot back in fourth on 136 at the venerable Delhi Golf Club.

Multiple Asian Tour winners Angelo Que of the Philippines and S.S.P. Chowrasia of India tied fifth alongside Das Shankar of India after shooting 68, 68 and 70 respectively.

Siddikur, the first Bangladeshi to play and win on the Asian Tour in 2010, took advantage of his straight hitting game and a hot putter, making 27 putts at the venerable Delhi Golf Club.

“I played aggressively again and I’m really enjoying this new style of play. I didn’t do anything exceptional in my game but I’m just enjoying the way I’m playing now. My game was excellent thanks largely to my short game,” smiled Siddikur.

South African Ernie Els charged into contention with a brilliant six-under-par 65 to trail halfway leader Siddikur of Bangladesh by one shot at the US$800,000 Venetian Macau Open on Friday 18.10.2013.

The four-time Major champion, who is also an Asian Tour honorary member and international ambassador, sank nine birdies against three bogeys at the Macau Golf and Country Club for a two-day total of six-under-par 136.

Siddikur was equally impressive in his round of 66 which included three birdies over his closing four holes as he edged ahead of the chasing pack in his search of a second Asian Tour victory.

Siddikur, the first Bangladeshi to win on the Asian Tour, produced a strong finish to snatch the second round lead in the Venetian Macau Open as he eyed a dream showdown with his idol, Els.

“It was a great round. I felt good. My ball striking was perfect, especially my putting as it all went in,” said Siddikur, who took only 25 putts and is currently 10th on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.

Jointly organised by Macau Sport Development Board of Macau SAR Government (MSDB) and Golf Association of Macau, the tournament is sanctioned by the latter and the Asian Tour, and promoted by IMG.
